Position Summary:
RSF Social Finance seeks to hire a full-time Vice President of Client Development who aspires to apply her/his professional experience and creative capacity in support of RSF’s mission and activities. The Vice President of Client Development will be responsible for developing and overseeing all aspects of RSF Social Finance’s client development and fundraising strategy. The primary goal of this position is to advance RSF’s leadership position and public visibility by cultivating and maintaining relationships with investors and donors and by accessing investment capital and philanthropic gifts to support RSF’s activities.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Fund Development & Client Engagement:
- Work closely with the President/CEO and Board Chair in a team-based approach to identify and cultivate important investor/donor relationships with the goal of soliciting funds for RSF’s Investing, Lending, and Philanthropic Services programs
- Meet or exceed short-term and long-term goals for fund development as determined in the budget process and by the President/CEO
- Embody and represent the core values of RSF Social Finance. Develop and express a deep interest in the organization’s mission, focus areas, and operating principles
- Develop, implement, and expand the overall client and fund development strategy, focusing on the following primary audiences and stakeholders:
- High Net Worth Investors and Donors
- Retail Investors
- Foundations
- Wealth and Investment Advisors
- Consultants and Network Managers
- Oversee donor and investor relations, including: generating new relationships through word-of-mouth, referrals, and other relationship-based approaches as well as special events, major donor programs, and planned-giving
- Ensure the proper collection and tracking of donor/client information through RSF’s database and constituent tracking system
- Effectively use social media and other innovative technologies to ensure that RSF stays at the leading edge of the social finance field
- Attend and lead client development efforts at the many “opportunities for engagement” events that RSF provides for clients and stakeholders (i.e. conferences and RSF-sponsored convenings)
- Build on RSF’s successful fund development achievements (including over $65 million raised during the last two years). Responsible for achieving the organization’s fundraising goal of $85+ million over the next three years
- Capitalize on an established network of contacts in the fields of social finance, social enterprise, and/or philanthropy
Strategic Oversight:
- Participate as a key member of RSF’s Management Team (the organization’s senior leadership team that is responsible for creating and executing the Strategic Plan)
- Integrate strategic thinking, experience, and management skills to oversee multifaceted client development strategy
- Ensure the alignment of the Development Team’s strategies and timelines with other RSF departments
- Assess and vet new opportunities and prioritize Development Team tasks as necessary
- Communicate key learnings from the field to other team members and staff
- Contribute to building an entrepreneurial culture, with an ethic of continuous improvement
- Participate/lead new product development process(es)
Leadership & Management:
- Supervise, support, and mentor a team of three employees (Manager of Strategic Development, Manager of Impact Investing, and Manager of Client Development)
- Approve annual work plans for each supervisee and track their progress
- Monitor individual staff performance and support staff development. Ensure a strong team and efficient working environment
- Manage department budget and ensure budget discipline
- Effectively coordinate development efforts with the work of the Marketing and Communications Team, including providing insight and feedback on collateral, editorial, and online materials that showcase RSF’s work
- Oversee all aspects of client development infrastructure (e.g. contact management database)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The successful candidate will have:
- Commitment to the mission and values that underlie RSF’s work
- Excellent oral and written communications skills (including the ability to communicate complex ideas and concepts in a professional manner)
- Exceptional interpersonal and listening skills to effectively interact with staff, clients and prospects, strategic partners, the press, and the public
- Basic media and PR training (preferred)
- Capacity to organize, facilitate, and work in a team-oriented atmosphere
- Capacity to maintain confidentiality and manage highly sensitive relationships and information
- Strong knowledge of the key financial instruments and financial issues in the social finance and philanthropic fields
- Technical knowledge of debt/equity structures, banking terms, legal agreements, and gift/legacy vehicles, etc.
- Strong computer skills including, but not limited to: databases, MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
- Capacity to integrate innovative communication technologies in the development process
- Strong presentation skills including the ability to draft/create professional proposals for specific prospect/client presentations
- Strong drive to establish and achieve well-defined goals
- Excellent judgment, strong organizational and decision-making skills, and the ability to take initiative and manage time well
- Ability to work well under pressure
- Must be able to travel extensively, at least 40% of overall time
Education & Experience:
The successful candidate will have:
- A minimum of 15 years of experience in client development, with at least 10 years of experience in positions with significant decision-making, financial, and relationship development responsibilities
- BA/BS degree (required)
- Strong management and mentorship skills (preferably with a history of supervising teams of three or more people)
- Proven leadership and self-starter capacities
- Volunteer leadership responsibilities with a non-profit organization a plus
Compensation & Benefits:
This position offers opportunities for growth as well as a very competitive compensation package commensurate with equivalent positions in the non-profit finance sector. The salary range is $150,000 – $175,000 per year, depending on experience.
